GENERAL TIPS AND TRICKS (see specific uses and recipes below, after reading the tips and tricks)
ADDING YOUR OWN NATURAL FRAGRANCE: Our Castile Soap is unscented and fragrance free. You can easily add your own scents with essential oils. Try adding some drops of essential oils (you do not need many drops) to create your own personal fragrance!
ESSENTIAL OILS: You can add scent to your Castile Soap with natural aromatic essential oils. Many essential oils have properties that are beneficial for the skin, so they bring an added bonus to the ‘body uses’ (outlined below) of this product. They also possess many other beneficial properties that allow you to tailor any of the ideas below to your needs. You can use essential oils of your choice to fragrance your product or for the cleaning qualities, healing benefits or antibacterial & antimicrobial properties.
If using your Castile creations for children, ensure to only use essential oils that are safe for use around children and in smaller amounts. If using for pregnant women please ensure you only use essential oils that are safe to use during pregnancy and to consult a doctor if required.
Using high amounts of essential oils can lead to consistency issues and/or cloudiness. It is best to add few drops at a time, checking for any consistency changes as you go. If your soap begins to thicken, you can add a few drops of hot water at a time to thin the product back down to the desired consistency.
Sometimes mixing essential oils directly may cause separation between the oils and the soap. Try a small batch at first and if this occurs you may wish to try these steps to avoid separation all together:
· Heat the Castile soap in a stainless-steel saucepan over low heat for about 5 minutes.
· Gradually mix the soap and oil(s) together
· Using an immersion blender, blend for 1 minute
· Stir occasionally while soap cools
· Once cooled, pour blended soap into a bottle of your choice
Always use caution when handling hot soap. Ensure you only heat on a low heat. Very carefully use the immersion blender upright to mix.
THICKENING: You can thicken Castile Soap with the addition of common salt. Only a very small amount is needed. To do this you make a small amount of salt solution using 1 part table salt and 1 part warm water. Ideally, leave the salt solution to dissolve for one hour. Then add the solution 1 tsp (or less) at a time to your soap, mixing well until the desired consistency is achieved. It is recommended that you do a small test batch rather than doing this with a large amount of Castile.
ADDING ADDITIONAL MOISTURISING BENEFITS: For some skin types, Castile Soap may feel a little bit drying. To add some moisturising properties you can add a tiny bit of your favourite carrier oil. Some good options are – Avocado Oil, Vitamin E oil, Olive Oil or Fractionated Coconut Oil.
What sort of water should you use for diluting Castile Liquid Soap?
Ideally Demineralised (Distilled), filtered, or otherwise purified water is best to increase the longevity of your finished product. Tap or cooled boiled water is also fine, especially if you go through your formula quickly. If your solution turns cloudy with tap water and/or a white residue settles at the bottom of the bottle, it may be that your water is hard (has a high concentration of minerals) and the minerals are reacting with it. It is still fine to use, however you may wish to try demineralised water. You can use tap water, however if you want your product to last longer it is best to use distilled water as it's free of potential contaminants.
Other things to consider when using Castile Liquid Soap:
If you have hard water, it may react with castile soap and leave behind a white film residue.
Castile liquid soap does not mix well with vinegar or lemon and will also create a film residue.

BODY USES:
Face cleanser
My Natural Beauty’s Castile Liquid soap is a wonderful natural facial cleanser, no matter your skin type. This is very gentle and perfect for anyone who likes a simple formulation which melts away makeup and sunscreen without stripping the skin. Simply apply two to three drops onto wet hands, then apply to your wet face and massage into skin.
Makeup Remover
Can be used as above or Castile soap can be combined with witch hazel or rosewater and a carrier oil of your choice to make a natural makeup remover. Mix equal parts of all three ingredients together and use a cotton ball to gently remove makeup. Then use a washcloth with warm water to remove any remaining residue. Or you can use the below recipe to make makeup remover or make up remover pads.
Recipe: Natural Makeup Remover Pads
EQUIPMENT
A small container with lid (approximately 230-250ml)
INGREDIENTS
▢ 2 teaspoons fractionated coconut oil
▢ 1 teaspoon of My Natural Beauty’s Organic Castile Soap
▢ 2 tablespoons of Organic Bulgarian Rose Hydrosol or Witch Hazel
▢ 5 drops essential oil
▢ 5 drops vitamin E oil
▢ Cotton rounds or reusable makeup remover pads
METHOD
1. Place all the ingredients in the small container mason jar and put the lid on tightly.
2. Shake the jar well to thoroughly mix the ingredients.
3. Add the cotton rounds to the jar, submersing into the liquid. Put on the lid and swish the solution around to allow the cotton rounds to become soaked in the liquid. You could also experiment by making makeup remover wipes with soft cloths instead (you would need to make a larger batch and use a larger container).
Note- If you do not wish to make makeup remover pads, you can make the same recipe and simply skip step 3. You could use a bottle instead and coat a cotton round in the makeup remover
Replace lid and swish jar around upside down a few times until cotton rounds are thoroughly soaked in the liquid.
Hand Wash
Our Castile Liquid soap is a perfect hand wash. We recommend 1 part Organic Castile Liquid Soap to approximately 2-3 parts of water. You can use a foaming bottle if desired (please see below- we find foaming bottles the best for handwash). This is wonderful for handwashing, as well as wiping bench tops, basins or anything that needs cleaning in the kitchen or bathroom. Just apply a little to a cleaning cloth and wipe bench tops etc. A fantastic multipurpose product. You can also add essential oils if desired.
Foaming Hand and Body Wash
We recommend using foaming bottles for hand and body wash (please see the dilution tips below). Not only does it produce a delightfully soft fluffy foam, there are also many other benefits such as:
Less mess at the sink. No more drips down the side of the bottle or pump and soap on the counter. Foaming soap is not as messy and ideal for many settings.
Better than using a regular pump with Castile Liquid Soap- Regular pumps with Castile Soap may dispense too fast and if left for a few days the Castile soap can dry up in the pump causing it to squirt sideways when you use it next. If you like a pump with Castile a foaming pump is best.
Dispenses the correct amount and saves money. It is difficult to get the correct amount needed straight from an undiluted bottle. By diluting the soap in the foaming bottle, the equivalent of just a drop or two of soap comes out per pump. This makes a little Castile go a very long way and it spreads much better. A very economical versatile way to use this soap.
Foaming soap requires less water to wash and rinse hands versus a liquid soap, while still achieving the same cleaning efficacy.
The kids love it. The gloriously fluffy foam is a sensory treat that feels wonderful against the skin. Not only is it enjoyable for kids (and adults) to use, it is less messy and washes off easier, making handwashing easier and more fun for everyone.
Recipe: Foaming Castile Hand and Body Soap Recipe
Equipment:
-You will need a foaming soap dispenser. Using a foaming dispenser creates a luscious foamy texture that goes a long way, saving you time and money.
You can re-use a foaming dispenser, invest one to suit your décor, or you may wish to try My Natural Beauty’s refillable foaming dispensers.
-A funnel
MEASUREMENTS:
As a guide you can try:
1 part Organic Castile Liquid Soap
3 parts water (Ideally demineralised (distilled) water)
15-20 drops of your preferred essential oil (optional)
PLEASE NOTE- Some people prefer a bit more soap than 1 to 3 parts (1/4 of the total being Castile). You can use up to half Castile Soap and half water. While others like to use less Castile and more water (1:5 ratio of Castile to water also works well). Experiment with what consistency works best for you and with the foaming bottle you are using. It is personal preference and best to experiment a little with different measurements to see what you like best.
If using My Natural Beauty’s 450ml Refillable Pump Foam Bottles, here is a guideline (rounded off to easier measurements):
120ml Organic Liquid Castile Soap
330ml Water (Ideally demineralised (distilled) water)
15-20 drops of your preferred essential oil (optional)
METHOD:
-Using the funnel, add the essential oil to the dispenser bottle.
-Add the Castile Soap
-Add the demineralised water
-Screw the lid on the dispenser
-Shake well to combine. You are done!
TO USE:
Squirt one or two pumps into the palm of your hand and as normal. Rinse with water and dry your hands.
If the ingredients separate, give your bottle a little shake.
If you are washing your hands alot and want to add some moisturising power to your hand soap, simply add a tablespoon of your favourite carrier oil to the mixture. Shake well. Some separation may occur so you may need to shake to mix every so often.
Body wash
For a classic and effective body wash which works to wipe away all of the day's dirt and grime and leave you feeling fresh and clean, all you need to do is squirt one small drop onto a loofah, wet wash cloth or sponge, then apply to your wet body and lather into a rich foam.
Alternatively, you can make your own body wash using My Natural Beauty's Organic Castile Liquid Soap. Please see the recipe below.
RECIPE: Homemade Body Wash using Castile Soap
Ingredients
1 cup distilled, filtered or cooled boiled water
1/4 cup Liquid Castile Soap (Unscented)
1 teaspoon vegetable glycerine
Optional- 1-2 teaspoons of a carrier oil (e.g. Fractionated Coconut Oil, Almond Oil, Jojoba etc.) This ingredient is optional and is included to provide a subtle moisturising effect.
10- 15 drops essential oils. Any scent you like.
Instructions
Place all ingredients in a small bowl and mix. Or simply pour into the bottle and gently shake around to mix the ingredients.
Pour into a sealed non- breakable bottle or container.
Use as hand soap or body wash.
Notes:
You can use raw honey instead of vegetable glycerine.
Foaming soap pump bottles are great, especially for kids. You can add more water if using a foaming pump. As a general rule, if using a foaming pump bottle 1/5 of it would be Castile Soap and the rest can be water. ¼ Castile to ¾ water also works fine.
Shampoo
Organic Castile Liquid Soaps can also be used as a natural shampoo! Mix ½ tbsp. into your hand and work into wet hair, massaging into a lather. Alternatively, you can dilute ½ tbsp. into ½ a cup of water for a slightly weaker solution.
Bath liquid
To get the most out of your relaxing bath, simply add 2 tbsp. of the soap into your bath water for a cleansing and nourishing addition. It’s relaxing and cleansing and skin will feel so soft. You can also add relaxing essential oils such as Lavender for extra relaxation and a beautiful aroma.
Natural Bubble Bath
Combine 1 Cup Castile Soap with ¼ Cup vegetable Glycerine and mix well. You can also add 10-15 drops of essential oil (Lavender is perfect for a relaxing bath). Please keep, however, if using for children always ensure to only use essential oils that are safe for use around children and in smaller amounts. Keep your bubble bath in a bottle and use a small amount in the bath as required.
Shaving liquid
For a clean shave, work 10 drops into a lather using some water, then apply to skin. For shaving underarms, we recommend 3 drops and for legs approximately ½ tsp. Massage into skin as you go and add water as needed to help prevent razor irritation and achieve a close shave.
Foot bath
For a relaxing end to a long day, you can use Organic Liquid Castile Soaps as a soothing and hydrating foot bath to help relax tired or swollen feet. Add 1.5 tsp of the soap into a small tub of warm water, place your feet inside, then sit back and relax for as long as you like! Try adding relaxing essential oils of your choice for added relaxation.
AROUND THE HOUSE USES:
Dishwashing liquid
To clean your dishes with a safe and natural dishwashing liquid, you can dilute the Castile Soap 1:10 with water to create a gentle detergent which works to remove food and stains and leave your dishes sparkling clean.
Laundry detergent
Another great way to use the castile soaps is as a laundry detergent that won’t leave any residue on your clothing and thoroughly removes dirt and grease. Add ⅓ - ½ cup of the soap into a large load. For spot cleaning, massage a small amount into the affected area to lather and lift the stain.
Floor Cleaner
To create an effective soap to clean your floors of dirt, dust and lingering germs, mix in ½ cup of soap into 10L of hot water to create a lightly soapy solution which doesn't leave behind any stickiness. You can also use a small amount (1-2 pumps) with approximately 500ml of water as the cleaning solution in the handy little portable microfiber clean up mops that spray water. Depending on your floor, experiment with the best dilution of you. This works a dream and saves a lot of money buying commercial solutions.
Multipurpose cleaning spray
For a multipurpose spray that you can use all around the house, you can mix ¼ cup of castile soap into a spray bottle filled with water, then wipe down surfaces in the kitchen, bathroom or wherever as needed. You can add in ¼ tsp of tea tree essential oil or lemon essential oil for extra cleaning and antibacterial power.
Natural Surface Cleaner
In a spray bottle, mix 500ml water with about 2 tablespoons (approximately 30ml) of liquid Castile Soap until well combined. Add 15 drops of essential oil of choice – lemon, eucalyptus, peppermint, or lavender are all excellent options for surface cleaners. Ensure the essential oils you choose suit the surface you are using it on.
Window cleaner
To get streak-free, crisp and clean windows, simply mix 1 tbsp. of castile soap into a spray bottle of hot water. Then simply wipe down with a squeegee or microfibre cloth to remove marks, water spots and dirt. Be sure to dry off the glass with a clean dry microfiber cloth or paper towel to ensure no marks are left behind. This also works well for mirrors and other shiny surfaces.
Toilet cleaner
To clean your toilet with castile soap, dilute 1:4 with water in a spray bottle, then spray into your toilet bowl and sprinkle baking soda onto your scrubbing brush. Scrub your toilet and leave to sit for 10 minutes before flushing away to reveal a sparkling clean toilet.
Scouring scrub
You can use castile soap scrub cleaner in your kitchen or bathroom. Mix 1 part castile soap and 3 parts of water in a spray bottle. Shake some baking soda and then spray the cleaning solution on the area that needs to be cleaned. Use a sponge or brush to scrub away any dirt or grime.
Makeup brush cleaner
Ideally you should wash your makeup brushes every week if you can. Simply fill a cup with warm water and a few drops of castile soap. First rinse your brushes in water, then place them in the cup for about 10 minutes. Rinse the brushes again and allow them to air dry.
OTHER USES FOR CASTILE SOAP:
Fruit and vegetable rinse
Simply mix a small dash of the soap into a bowl of water, then scrub away dirt or residue from your fresh produce. After cleaning, rinse well with fresh water. Tip- This works perfectly to wash celery before juicing!
Dog shampoo
Even your pups can benefit from castile soap! Depending on the size of your dog, the amount you use will vary. Wet your dog thoroughly and work a small amount of the soap into their fur until you reach a lather. Massage as needed, then rinse well.
Please adapt the recipes above to suit your needs and look into other natural products such as essential oils that can be combined with castile soap for even more options.
